Every participating HEROES school performs health assessments on all students at each grade level (High schools assess only the freshman class). These assessments are done twice a year, once in the fall semester and once in the spring semester. Height, weight, blood pressure, and neck circumference are all measured on each student. From the height and weight, BMI (Body Mass Index) is then calculated for the student. The neck circumference measurement is taken because this measurement is comparable to the waist circumference measurement but is less invasive for the student being assessed. As of this coming school year (2011-12), letters will be sent home to the parents/guardians of the students, to make them aware of their child’s health assessment results. There will also be information sent home concerning resources that are available for the students to participate in, to better their student health assessment rankings.
